Broking Adds $4.1 Billion to the Australian Economy

Deloitte puts the industry's direct economic contribution at $4.1 billion in gross value added and 37,349 full-time equivalent jobs. Here is how that value is created, and what it says about the work brokers actually do.

Deloitte Access Economics' Value of Mortgage and Finance Broking 2025, prepared for the MFAA, quantifies an industry that is usually described in anecdotes. Mortgage and finance broking contributed an estimated $4.1 billion in gross value added to the Australian economy and supported 37,349 full-time equivalent jobs, directly and through flow-on activity.

Where the value comes from

  • Direct activity from 22,031 brokers across 10,635 broking businesses
  • Support and administration roles employed inside broking firms
  • Flow-on demand for aggregators, compliance, technology and professional services
  • Consumption effects from wages paid across the broader supply chain

The industry is overwhelmingly small business. Most broking firms operate with a handful of people, which means the economic contribution is spread across thousands of local communities rather than concentrated in a few head offices.

Productivity is rising per broker

Average monthly settlement value per broker rose 42% between 2018 and 2024, from about $1 million to $1.4 million. Part of that is house price growth, but a meaningful share reflects better process: digital applications, cleaner data, and software that removes rekeying from the workflow.

"The industry's economic footprint is a function of how efficiently each broker can serve clients — not just how many brokers there are."

Analysis of Deloitte Access Economics, 2025

What it means for an individual practice

If sector-level growth is being driven by productivity rather than headcount, the same logic applies inside a single business. The constraint on most brokers is not lead volume; it is time spent on administration, data reconciliation and manual review of an existing book. Removing that overhead is the practical version of the national productivity story.
